Let the filmmaking begin!

Today was a preproduction day of scouting locations, meeting with hair and make-up people, discussing costumes, and rehearsing (in my living room). Our team was all over the city getting things ready for our shoot that starts Thursday! They were together twelve plus hours today!

I'm most impressed with people passionate about the arts that they would be willing to give their time for free to not only make a good story, but simply to work together---(knowing that something supernatural happens in the community of filmmaking)!

Here's some light testing going on in the FOX theatre in which we get to shoot! We are so excited! We also were given the gift of using this space and it just happened to be the perfect time for us to use it for the film fest shooting requirements!

FUN FACT: One of our special crew members is a long time Bay Area, filmmaking native: Ned Kopp (below). He's been working in films since the 1970's. He's worked with Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, Bill Cosby, Robin Williams, and now us. And why is he working with us? When I asked him he said, "Why not?!" He just loves making movies! He's giving his time totally free because he loves filmmaking! He knows what he's doing and it's great to listen to all his stories. What a humble guy! And below is Tammy Calderon. This will be her second film she's worked hair and make-up. It's awesome to watch her light up and give her input. She'll also be bringing some of her students from her cosmetology program to help! Thanks everyone!

This guy has been all over the world and worked with Elle Magazine (USA, and Turkey), Hilton Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Kimpton and Hyatt Hotels, Coca-Cola Company (Europe, Asia, and USA), Time Warner Music, HBO, Fox Networks, Neiman Marcus, Armani, Donna Karan and, Oscar De La Renta to name a few.

I signed a contract saying I wouldn't post any pics from the shoot or blog about what we are doing/wearing. So I will honor that.

All I can say is that I really like this hotel and I am glad I get to represent them!

Knife Fight

This week I had a "featured role" in Knife Fight, a filmed directed by Bill Guttentag (who happens to be a professor at Stanford).

A featured Role basically means I'm in a scene interacting with a principal character but no lines and most likely no credit. But hey I was glad to do it as there a lots of great actors in this flick like Rob Lowe, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Julie Bowen--the mom on MODERN FAMILY.

The film deals with the dark side of political operatives.

I got to play a liberal political blogger.

Here I am with actress Jamie Chung. I had never heard of her but she's been in a lot of films, (just in the Hangover part 2 as the main guy Ed Helms' Fiancee). Basically in the scene her character talks to me, a blogger, and I just get to nod my head.

That is Bill the director in the pic above.
The scene was filmed in the Honey Honey (Crepe) cafe in San Francisco.

Much Ado about SOMETHING Amazing!

I tried to turn it down a couple times. My life always seems so full as it is. I shuttered at how much work it would involve volunteering with twelve kids attempting to perform Shakespeare (in the original language), especially twelve kids with English as a second language. And as far as I knew none had ever acted in any capacity before. It seemed quite challenging. But I'm extremely glad I didn't miss this opportunity. About six weeks ago, because of the encouragement of a passionate parent/neighbor of mine, I sat down with this local committed teacher, Sarah Coyle, who explained her big dream: to give her kids an opportunity to do something they'd never done before (and might not ever get a chance to do). Due to many school district cuts, public schools have no room for extras, let alone the arts. My heart melted and I agreed to direct this group of 4th and 5th grade students in scenes from Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing."

I first only agreed to one hour a week. The realized it needed to be two, then three hours, and on some weeks four hours with the last week being as much time as I could! And with a lot of prayer we pulled off two performances on Friday and I must say, they nailed it! I was so proud of them. (We have one show left next week). Needless to say I grew in love with them (even when they forget their lines and add lib things about Chuck E. Cheese and Red Lobster. Yes it happened, and it was one of the funniest moments in the performance).

My mother-in-law painted facial hair for the guys. It added so much and gave them a boost of character.

The backdrop/set was designed and constructed in a great community collaboration (I love this word).
It all started from my neighbor who connected me to the school. Then she and another friend who is a part of my Church designed/painted the set. It's beautiful.

5th grade Victoria, in blue below, plays Beatrice. She will also get a scholarship to attend Broadway By the Bay's Youth Theatre Conservatory! The kids had never experienced wearing a microphone before. Having amplification added so much to the performance.

My long time friend, Erica Wyman (actor and director as well, below in the pink), with her Broadway by the Bay connections hooked me with the Boys and Girls' club two years ago. And now she agreed to help partner in this little production. She arranged a great sound system and invited Broadway by The Bay's Development Director Tyler Bennet and Executive Director Jim Gardia, to watch the show. They greeted the kids afterward and just gushed all over them which made the kids feel so amazing! We are so thankful to Broadway by the Bay for covering our costumes, as well! They were a perfect fit for the show!

My favorite part was hearing the kids' reactions. They knew they had accomplished something beyond their abilities, they felt good about themselves, experienced teamwork, and they were already dreaming about a "Midsummer Night's Dream for next year"....We'll see about that..

Producing a short film

I'm creating a short film. It will be a short film for the 168 Film Project in LA. It's a "speed film-making project so we have one week to write the script and one week to film & edit it.

If you'd like to participate in any way, (acting or behind the scenes crew) I have some needs.

SHOOTING SCHEDULE:THURSDAY 2/17 START & FILM MUST BE EDITED AND OVERNIGHTED TO LA BY THURSDAY 2/24.

All films screen in Hollywood at the 168 Film Festival on March 31 -April 2, 2011.

We are also looking for donations to rent gear & provide food for the crew & talent who are volunteering for the fun & creativity of it.

Mark Holthusen Shoot

Today I got to work with an amazing photographer, Mark Holthusen, who has a crazy creative style. Check out his work. He's a world renowned shooter, International Photographer of the Year last year, Hasselblad Master this year and he's shooting a series of dime store novel covers. I was super stoked to be a part of some of his portfolio work.

The shoot was produced by Jason Santos (below in plaid) at Left Space Studios in San Francisco. Great space!
For my scene, Mark was recreating some old school Zane Gray type western shots

I got to pose as if I was being shot over a fence. The hat, gun, and fence would be added later and Jason Santos (the guy holding me) would be removed! Ahh the wonders of photoshop!

The ironic thing was just a couple years ago I was in the exact same studio space in western wear for Sony Buzz.

One of those things were we don't get paid but in exchange, now my wife and I get to stay a night there in one of the King Luxury rooms! Stoked to use that for our anniversary in November. California Tourism Commerical

Hello Squaw Valley--you can't miss these snow pants.

Got to spend a day at beautiful Squaw Valley in Tahoe shooting a California Tourism commercial.
One of the cool parts were the talented athletes that were a part of the commercial: Olympic medalist (and pink-haired hipster, pictured below) Shannon Bahrke, Olympic Gold medalist Julia Mancuso,

and the Jamaican U.S. Ski team member Errol Kerr. Errol was cool and for this picture took me off guard by picking me up.

One of the scenes for the commercial (coming out fall 2010) was a Reggae, dance party with a steel drum band (watch the video below).

And the spinning talents of DJ Alex Merrell. (even though she really didn't spin she just "acted" like she did).

The views were great, the weather was perfect and really the people we got to work with were fun and humble. That's the best thing--when working with talented people to find humility and generosity. I like that. Great day, great place, and great people to work with.

Lighting Up Hollywood

Just returned from a great time in SoCal: Studio City at CBS Studios. Four of us spent the day with hundreds of other Hollywood types at Biola's 15th annual conference for Christians in Media and entertainment.

In between workshops on Film Making (one of my faves by Stan Williams), new technology, and good story-telling we were seizing any opportunity we could to pose in front of CBS logos while checking out sets , sound stages, and the scenery lots.

Here I am with my pal Gabe. He directs the PeaPod group (a media/arts academy at the Redwood City Boys and Girls' club) .

Here's me below (looking like Shark boy. I blame the wind for my "hair-fin."), with Paul Skidmore: up and coming film-maker extraordinaire who tweets regularly and gave a crazy good workshop on the future of technology and film-making. (His last film he just used his iPhone pretty much to direct, location scout, produce, etc).

One of the moments that stands out is when I was escorted- like a criminal-out of the conference, while I was sitting in the front row in front of everyone. They thought I was bootlegging some of the never before screened footage in a new trailer for the third installment of the Narnia films: C.S. Lewis' Voyage of the Dawn Treader. No joke. They warned the whole audience that they had to be super tight on security and asked us to have integrity not to leak it out. So I put my phone down and didn't even want to touch it during the three minute clip. After the trailer finished and every one applauded for Walden Media president, Michael Flaherty ... I grabbed my phone to tweet my response and check others who were posting under the twitter hashtag #bmc10. Just then, about 5-10 minutes after the trailer in the middle of the guest speaker Q&A-- a security guard crawled out the front middle row and said, "Sir, I need you to come with me..and bring your phone, too." So funny..I was paralyzed. "Excuse me?"
Here's the pic I took of Ralph Winter and Dick Cooke, minutes before I almost got tazed.

Just kidding, they didn't taze me but I felt like yelling that out. "I'm innocent, don't taze me bro!" I was taken to the back stage area where I was surrounded by an entourage of some tough guys types :) and Biola Media officials: Peggy Rupple and Kathy Cooke. Both women were very kind apologized repeatedly saying it was just protocol and they just needed to take every precaution. Peggy even bear hugged me to smooth it over. Good thing cause I almost wet myself. It was definitely awkward but now makes a great story. I shared it Sunday Night with my Church and they cracked up. (I totally understand they had to crackdown). They made me go through my phone's pics and videos and then set me free. Even though I was completely innocent--it was a weird feeling. My heart was beating fast, I was sweating, and trying not to think of what this could do to my illustrious career but hey..you know what they say in Hollywood-any publicity is good publicity right?Some one later commented--"Now you now how Jesus feels." Well, Jesus was falsely accused for calling himself God, whipped and beaten innocently for the sins of the world, not falsely accused of bootlegging--not quite an equal comparison, but worth a little chuckle. If anything, I'd say after my experience I now have more sympathy for Hollywood rebels like Lyndsay Lohan.

Besides my almost arrest, another highlight was how Twitter was used incessantly during the day. I must have tweeted a quote every ten minutes or more. Then-found a group of people to have dinner with via a "Tweet-up!" Gotta love it! Shout out to the Daily Grill crew!

We topped of our night with in a cool little private CBS screening room watching the film: "Like Dandelion Dust." Quite the emotional roller coaster-see behind the scenes here. Cool story about two families who are intersected and torn apart by the love of one little boy and his adoption, one is his biological family and one is his adopted family. It comes out in September. Bring Kleenex. Here we are with Director Jon Gunn and one of the lead actresses Kate Levering.Overall I loved the conference. Besides some of the cheesy music that played (a Jazz version of "Here I am to Worship,") and a few "oversaved" (in the words of comedian Michael Jr.) vendors tabling their merchandise at the conference, this event was well worth it. And I hope I get to go again. Maybe I'll get a free ticket for suffering the Christ-like humiliation of being forsaken and accused of bootlegging..hmmm...:)

I heart Hollywood. I love the creativity, potential, the stories and most definitely the people! God God! Go Biola! Way to go.
I pray God continues to do great work through his people to tell amazing stories that change the world and impact those in the theaters, on set, and behind the scenes.

I love when stuff works like this. I got a call from a friend who said an actor bailed out of a short film. They needed someone quick and I fit the type. I got a great lead role in a cool little short inspired by the likes of David Lynch and Memento, and I didn't have to audition. Whew! Thankfully SAG was willing to do a quick approval of the project and I found myself on set and in front of the camera.

First day started the shoot at a seedy little hotel, and it definitely was. I had to walk around barefoot and I was afraid of what I might pick up.

Then shot a scene in this bathtub where, of course, they hot water wasn't working. Needless to say I was very cold. Lots of twists in this film...
Shot in my good buddy photographer John Meyer's house--who had a perfect bedroom for one of the scenes. And I worked with fellow Marla Dell Talent actor Beth Bemis.
This short film has some great scenes to act in--car crash, club scene, strangled by an attacker and waking up in a mysterious location with bruise on my head.

Was working with Scot Hunt of Net Filmz on a little project that started out as a potential pilot that has morphed into a a short called, "REPS."

Got to shoot at this house.

I played a supporting role--a granola, couch surfer brother (named Yiani) to a Type A pharmaceutical drug representative. A fast talking, pill peddling, womanizing, ego maniac, successful younger brother to my character. I was hanging outside his house (very nice pad) to ask his forgiveness.
Cool thing was friend and make-up artist Lisa Martinez was on the set, too.

Cayson Designs Photo Shoot

Very thankful to Lynette Cayson, the owner of Cayson designs for booking me for her San Francisco Culinary Fashion show..well, it wasn't quite a fashion show..I just liked the sound of that :) ... It was a print shoot to display designs used by top chefs all around the country. That's Lynette in the picture with me. She's a great person and her stuff will be on her updated website soon.
I must admit when I was done, I was both hungry and desirous of cooking a seven course meal! My wife asked me if I took the pictures with skillets in my hand...not quite. I just stood there and smiled--(it was more about the clothes than me) but I got to shoot in a very creative space: Stevan Nordstrom Productions.

Windrider Film Forum

This weekend I got to participate in a truly unique experience that merged my two loves: Film and theology. The inaugural Bay Area Windrider Film Forum was so creatively satisfying for me. I got to watch films and then talk about them with their makers! For over 5 years I have been a Seminary Student working on my Masters of Theology (about 9 weeks from now I graduate). It is kinda crazy to get a Masters in "studying God," cause obviously you can imagine-- studying God isn't as easy as just filling in a multiple choice test and walking away with a diploma. In Seminary we try to interpret the Bible's letters and stories through context, dissect its history, and write way too many papers. I'll leave Seminary with way more questions than I started but I'm seriously stoked to be a part of a Seminary that values looking for God and studying theology by looking to what's going on in culture through media and especially the the arts with emphasis on film. So Fuller Seminary helped sponsor this forum (which started at Sundance) and I was so glad I got to be a part of it. (Not only did I participate by watching films and taking in the Q&A-- I got to help interview some of the film makers for some video promo blurbs in the future).

Here's quick rundown:

April 8th: Thursday Evening
Opening Night Presentation and Film
6:00 pm Introduction and talk with Producer Ralph Winter (X-Men, Star Trek)and Fuller’s Chap Clark: I loved hearing about the Hero's journey.

7:30 pm Opening Film: AFTER THE STORM (what a great documentary on how kids in New Orleans processed Hurricane Katrina through putting on a musical).

April 9th: Friday Evening
7:30 pm Film: SYMPATHY FOR DELICIOUS This was a pure blow-out night. What an edgy film that dived head first into God's healing power and how according to Mark Ruffalo director, "We don't always get the healing we want, but we get the healing we need." It's a drama about a crippled DJ (actor/writer Chris_Thornton) in modern-day Los Angeles who discovers that he has the power to heal everyone but himself mixed in the hard and raunchy life of skid row and the punk rock scene of LA. Both of these guys shared some of their own stories of film and faith and it was moving.

As you can imagine people lost their minds over these two guys. Some true Hollywood fans emerged out of the film goers as well as the theology students and staff. It was quite fun to watch how people of all ages were star struck, frothing at the mouth for some celebrity face time, autographs, and pictures, and all in MENLO PARK of all places. But the attention was well deserved, Sympathy for Delicious was a dark and beautiful film that I hope many people get to see. In Mark's words it was "Rough and Holy."

WAITING FOR A TRAIN

One of my favorite films from the event was SHORT TERM 12. This 20 minute masterpiece was disturbingly delicious, (can I use the two words together?), written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. It truly invaded me while I watched it. The story is about abused teens living in a group home and how the adults, broken and messy themselves deal with the kids..as well as their own issues.

It took everything in me not to beg, (but I kinda did ask/hint) the director to cast me in one of his future films. I really sensed incredible artistic genius in him and his talents, and I would love to be connected to art like that. I actually got to interview him, (twice actually)and hear his story. He's VERY humble, I like meeting people like that in general but especially when they are film makers. I sincerely applauded him for his piece! I think I was more starstruck with Destin than the Friday night guys. I loved Short Term 12's music, the set, the actors and of course the story. This 20 minutes is full of gritty sadness, with true to life characters but that are also lovable and raw. It makes you think about hurt and often forgotten/unseen kids in our culture but it also caused me to look inward to my own life of hurt and how that has affected me. We all are affected by our hurts and just because we get old, doesn't mean we "grow up." Purchase the film and support! Read an interview here.

I got to sit with John Hindman for 15 minutes. I was nervous at first thinking I would feel small and insignificant with this big movie director. Although he was bold, confident, and fully willing to share his opinions --he was honest and authentic about his own spiritual journey. And later I found out ANSWER MAN was his directorial debut. I loved the film because it dealt with dark issues of death, alcoholism, awkward relationship stuff, and major father issues while being cloaked as a "Romantic Comedy," so as I was laughing I could address some of my own sadness and realizations of my own personal life.

Got a booking for a Cayson Designs: "Designers of fine restaurant uniforms and culinary clothing with style, quality, comfort and value." I'm going to be modeling "culinary apparel." I think it's hilarious and awesome cause I was in the restaurant biz for almost 10 years and I loved it!! So I'll be sporting chef jackets, server shirts, and busser coats! I walked into the their warehouse and they suited me up in about 20 different pieces of which we will shoot next week. Thank you God for a booking!

So, like I've said before, extra work is not the most satisfying work in the film industry, but it's a necessary thing. I was more than willing this time since I was going to be able to see George Lucas in action. He was finishing up some pick up shots for "Red Tails." It's about the Tuskegee airmen. Even as an extra, I spent more time in the hair trailer than you could imagine. I had to shave fully smooth and they cut my hair.
The funny thing? I ended up spending 12.5 hours on set, and I wasn't used once. But it was all work it to get a face to face, with full eye contact, "Hi," from the man himself: "George Lucas."

Another Trauma...

Today I got to play an EMT in the 80's. Say what? Time for a flashback scene for the NBC show TRAUMA. The same show I did stand in work for in October. Watch this show. I really like it, you can check all the episodes free online, too. Met Taylor Kinney, one of the actors today, in the craft services line of all places, who was really cool and down to earth.
Here I am (actually listening to my grad school lectures), right after I got suited up from wardrobe. Casting told me to come "unshaven" so that they could make me look 80's-ish, possibly like "Miami Vice's Don Johnson. "No joke, they told me that over the phone.
Here's some of the sites that can be seen on set. Lots of blood. It's a show about Trauma, so it's a necessity. (You won't want to miss the identity of this person who gets burned up in a fire).
Another actor walking around with a knife stabbed in his gut. Funny to watch him hunched over his place at lunch.

Then something pretty funny happened. Twice I got singled out from the director about my sideburns and facial hair. I knew these sideburns would come in handy some day. So they shaved them down once, then pretty much off the second time (when I got home my daughter had many questions about my baby face). So much for Miami Vice.

And after we wrapped the director, Jeff Riener, said I should consider going with this look more often it cause I might get more roles as an actor. Wow. Pretty cool tip to get from the director. As much as I love my facial hair, I'm thinking about just shooting some pics (with one of my favorite photographers around), to see what happens. Thanks to Gretchen-the make-up lady (black hat/blonde hair) who literally spent 45 minutes shaving my face, in the freakin cold, while holding my head so my neck wouldn't break! The whole time I was thinking, "I've never had anyone shave my face, for 45 minutes, outside in the freezing cold." Ah, Hollywood! (The life of an extra!).

Here's some pics of the class of kids I get to hang out with on Thursday nights. It's one of the highlights of my week. These guys (and there are more girls in the class than pictured but most of all left before we started taking the pics).

By a gracious grant from the Black Eyed Peas these kids have a phenomenal space to work their creativity. Full dance studio, computer lab for editing videos, and an amazing sound studio to record their music. It's a very amazing thing that they chose Redwood City to be a site! Watch the Video.

Each weeknight they have electives like acting, movie editing, sound mixing, dance, etc. in which they can take. It's a great program in association with Broadway by the Bay that I am so blessed to be a part of it. I come home full and energized with these kids' stories. All of them learning skills and developing their talents to make a difference and live a better story than the streets are offering them. We are working on improv skills, acting for the camera, and most of all, learning to tell (and live) a story that is worth watching (and living).

These kids are talented, amazing, and the future!

Trauma

Thankful that SF has a new show fully shot up here on location and in Treasure Island studios. (Hasn't been a show in ten years where all production is in SF). Trauma has been shooting up here since February and so far people are saying it is the new "ER." Please support it because it's great for our Bay Area economy and actors! I was a stand-in (for more info on what that is see this post) on Trauma this week. Of course I didn't get to do any acting but it was fun that I got to hang out on set, have some good conversations with fellow aspiring actors, and watch some great movie-like stunts on set.
I also got to hang out and watch the director, Jeff Reiner, in action. It was really cool and then I was talking with this guy behind the cameras (for like a minute) who then tells me he's Dario Scardapane, creator/exec. producer and writer. Dang, that was cool, and he was super friendly. Hear an interview with him here.

I'm praying that some day I'll get to work more on the show (or any show or film for that matter) other than just some extra work and maybe get a line...or two, or five.....someday. Here's for hoping.

Just shot another scene with the Berkeley Digital Film Institute. I got connected through my last project there (and still have one more project to complete with another student). Although it's all gratis, it's fun to work with dedicated students who work hard because then I get more practice, get to make some new connections/friendships, and possibly get stuff to use for my real! It's also a bonus when you get to shoot in a coffee shop (Village Grounds Cafe) and drink your favorite espresso drinks (Soy White Mocha) while filming through the night (when I work best)! Thanks to Adria (director) and the whole crew, especially Brooke the barista slash production assistant.

Rehearsal in the park.

Just worked on a student short with the Berkeley Digital Film Institute (BDFI). It was my first time hearing of them and working with them. The student team I worked with did a great job, they were very professional and took their project seriously. I really liked working with them and got hopeful for the talent that is in the Bay Area. I hope we have more great directors and producers who stick around San Francisco and bring some great film work here.

I played something all too close to home for a lot of people right now: someone who lost his job and hasn't been able to find work. He has a "Chance Meeting," with a former co-worker of his who's very stressed and caught up in her deadlines. Their conversation reminds both of them of the pluses and minuses of having a job and how easy it is to be enslaved by a job one minute and lose your job the next minute.

Cisco

Work is good! Two bookings in the same week! Sweet!
Today I shot an industrial for Cisco Eos with Westernized Productions. Marcello (Director) and Brandon (Producer) Grande, their real last name, are Italian brothers and great guys to work with. Had a great day with all cast and crew. Even got to hang with a friend who was also cast on the shoot.

I played a web developer working with new software (Cisco Eos). I got to shoot on a green screen with images and animation being added later in post-production.

Here's a look at the story board for an idea of some of the images to be added later.

Then I got to return to Crescendo Studios where I also was able to reconnect with some people I've met in the past. I was there last year for another recording session
of which you can see I'm wearing the exact same shirt. Nice.
All in all. A great day. Great production. Great people.

Old Spice

This week I Shot an in store commercial for Old Spice, by Premier Retail Networks (PRN).

My hand plays a "major role." I felt like David Duchovny's hand model character in Zoolander. I had to place the deodorant in and out of the locker and try to "hit my mark," every time. I had to have a manicure with "shiny clear polish," and man, it felt like my hands were glistening (nice word huh?) like some Rainbow Brite doll. I was a little self conscious about the nails, but I guess it's protocol! :) The other hilarious part is that my acting role this time around was playing a basket ball player.

I can barely dribble, but it actually worked great cause my character is supposed to have a locker room ego. I'm bragging like I "had game," (all because of Old Spice). I try to show off by spinning the ball and it flies quickly down to the ground, and I eat crow. It didn't take much to act like that, since I can't spin the ball in real life, anyway. It was perfect.

This Old Spice Ever Clear deodorant ad will be playing nationwide at at Super Walmarts with end cap displays starting May 4th.

A day as a Giant

This week I was a "stand in" for a commercial. Not quite acting nor the most lucrative job in the entertainment industry by any means, (it's one of the lowest places on the film industry totem pole, besides being an "extra."). Although it pays fairly well by the Screen Actors Guild, most stand-ins (and extras) are not treated all that well. Extras are sometimes referred to as background furniture and another stand-in and myself joked how we were referred to as "things." That's why I often avoid these roles but it was a really cool (ironic) commercial. It was for a new MLB Video game featuring the SF Giants! That's the laughable part, I am the farthest thing from an actual baseball player. BUT HEY..I CAN ACT LIKE I'M ONE and this week I was the stand-in for an SF's celebrity, Tim Lincecum, the pitcher for the Giants. We just happen to both be 5'10" and 170lbs.

Tim's a phenomenon really. Look him up. Despite being quite the celebrity, he was really cool and friendly. No traces of arrogance or pride at such a young age, and that was cool to see. He was very willing to take pics or sign autographs. He even was willing to leave a phone message for a friend of mine who's a huge fan (who ended up answering), and autographed a ball for me, too. (I felt like a weirdo fan asking for it, but he quickly obliged, with the caveat it wasn't for me).

It's December already. It's been a slow season for me in the acting world that's for sure. But alas, a role to exercise my chops!

I got to perform in a great short sketch this past weekend. What Church Christmas celebration doesn't need a nativity type sketch? But this one wasn't your run of the mill cast of characters. I got to play a wise man (wise guy) with a Brooklyn accent. It was actually a hybrid of Sopranos, Godfather, and the Director said, "Mark Wahlberg-ish."

Improv and 4th grade girls

I was invited this week by a friend of mine to teach improv to a group of 4th grade girls. This group of girls were together for a week of "friendship camp" that included activities like crafts, book discussions, talent shows, etc and I showed up for two days of improv training. Quite the experiment in patience with short attention spans but fun nonetheless, and the money I received for these classes was donated to the Not For Sale campaign which is used to spread awareness and help the 27 million women and children enslaved in human trafficking.

Stanford Law School

For my 5th year in a row, I was a part of the International Association of Defense Counsel as a mock witness for their trial academy held at Stanford University. I've played a bus driver "accused" of negligent driving. It's a great test of improv abilities! It's a two day project used sharpen up and coming lawyers from all over the country. I have always enjoyed playing a testy witness, eating great Stanford food, and reconnecting with the other actors who have been doing it annually, too.

Today I was on UC Berkeley's campus for an AT&T photo shoot coming out in September.

It was 90 degrees and since the campaign is coming out in the fall we all had to be in pants and long sleeves for a football game.

I thought I was gonna sweat like a pig but since we didn't have to run around a lot, it was cool.

For one shot we just hovered over David, the photographer, in a huddle.

During hair and make-up we stayed in the AC of the trailer. It was nice.

Another fun shot came at the end when two of us had to try and take down another BIG guy.

All the crew and talent were awesome. I had a real fun time on this shoot. And UC Berkeley has a great campus.

I am currently in Las Vegas working as the presenter for Microsoft at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) trade show.

Presenting new technology and solutions that meet the needs and opportunities of the media and entertainment industry has been awesome. There are some phenomenal advances in film making and broadcasting on the horizon.

And earlier this month I worked at the Moscone Center in
San Francisco for Identity Truth. A company concerned with preventing identity theft. I especially like the name of the company.

Their tagline was, "How is your "identity health? Do you need a check up?" (Hence the lab coat).

I shot a Web commercial for Buzz! by Sony Playstation. I was made up to look like a cowboy ala Clint Eastwood (it took one hour of makeup). It was a great crew to work with and really fun shoot.

I did live a performance at the season's opening of the San Francisco Opera. It was Sampson and Delilah so there was a pre-party sponsored by the SF Bravo! Club where I played a young
Cecil B. Demille.

They had a great set with perfect costumes. And it was all interactive with the party guests. A very fun night.

This month I wrote, "ran", and edited (shot by Matt Mayott) a short film for an experiential art exhibit called, "Hallowed" in San Jose. It was a one night event with nine other groups of artists and live bands. We had a great team of artists and the whole experience was successful and artistically energizing. This month I was a part of a documentary called, "What is Love?" by Kuhr Media. It's research into how people define and experience love. It explores the difference between choice and feelings. I think it will be a great piece that will impact what people think. Also, for the third year in a row, I was a part of the International Association of Defense Counsel as a mock witness for their trial academy held at Stanford University. I played a bus driver accused of negligent driving. It was a great two day improv project for me and was used to sharpen up and coming lawyers from all over the country.
